Frank Herbert's Dune is a story that can be appreciated for many different things, from the tale's fascinating conceptualization of humanity's future to its bold message of being critical of those in power. I believe that the most crucial character is Paul Atreides. The audience at first sees this young man as an insignificant boy. The politics and stratagems of the story's setting are as oblivious to Paul's potential as Paul is unaware of them. He soon learns to reach his full potential as the betrayal of his family thrusts him into dire survival. Paul quickly matures and takes advantage of the Fremen to defeat his adversaries. By the end, he had become an influential leader with passionate reverence.
Any actor who portrays this character must look the part of a young man and his transition into a charismatic leader. He should be able to be both unassuming and yet have a commanding presence. Beyond the character's physical characteristics, it is essential to keep in mind the story's deeper themes. The actor must convince the audience that they want Paul to succeed. The audience must reach the end of the story satisfied with his success and contemplating what he had to do to achieve it.
